Toronto, Ontario 17 December 2015- The International Center for Human Rights (ICHR) announced today that Mrs. Ghuna Bdiwi, Syrian lawyer, received the ICHR’s prestigious human rights award for 2015. Also Mr. Mohammad Olyaeifard, Iranian lawyer, received ICHR’s recognition award.

After a careful review of nominations, ICHR’s Award Committee selected Mrs. Ghuna Bdiwi for her significant contribution to advancing and protecting human rights for Syrian people and Syrian prisoners as well as victims of torture.

Ms. Karina Gould, member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, present ICHR Annual Award to Mrs. Ghuna Bdiwi.

ICHR’s Recognition Award was present to Mr. Mohammad Olyaeifard by Dr. Reza Moridi, Ontario’s Minister of Training, Universities and Colleges and Minister of Innovation and Research. Mr. Olyaeifard received this award for his outstanding contribution to human rights in Iran and defending political prisoners and juveniles in death row while he was in Iran. 

At the event, ICHR Executive Director Ardeshir Zarezadeh said: “Each year, in the anniversary of International Human Rights Day, day of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on December 10th, 1948, we get together to celebrate the human rights day and take action. And Our action is to recognize individuals or organizations that have made significant contribution to advancing and or protecting human rights.”

ICHR Annual Award Dinner was held on December 13th, 2015 at Paradise Banquet Hall. A number of government officials and human rights defenders spoke at the event and addressed human rights violation in Middle East and Canada’s role in the region.
